Essay

Bani Thani is the iconic portrait of the Kishangarh school of painting.

It is notable for its elongated nose, stretched bow like elongated eyebrows, eyes representing the petal of a Padma Lotus and pointed chin.

These features represented an ideal woman’s beauty at the time — a symbol of elegance and grace. The Rajasthani tradition is also incorporated in the portrait: Bani Thani is dressed like a bride with traditional Rajasthani sheer odhni (dupatta or scarf that covers half of her face: veil), adorned with gold and pearl beaded jewelry around her neck and on her head, ears, and nose. The veil in the painting is the cultural symbol of a woman’s modesty and honour.
